What is happening just northeast of the city?

Ohio is on the rise as Intel decided to invest more than $20 billion in construction for its new site. The company will build two new factories establishing a new epicenter for chipmaking. This venture will “boost production to meet the surging demand for advance semiconductors, powering a new generation of innovative products from Intel and serving the needs of foundry customers as a part of the company’s IDM 2.0 strategy.”

Intel has created excitement around the announcement with the label, Intel in Ohio: You Were Built For This. The landmark investment is outside the city of Columbus in New Albany, Ohio.

The Intel Development has Started

On September 9, 2022 Intel broke ground with a large audience. Moving forward, this means Intel will start its building process on the new manufacturing chip site.

In an article from The Verge, Rep. Tim Ryan, Ohio candidate for US Senate, said, “today we broke ground on a future that every Ohioan can be proud of. This multi-billion-dollar investment is a culmination of an unprecedented collaboration between federal, state, and private sector leaders that will transform Ohio’s economy and provide future generations an opportunity to build a stable middle-class life right here at home.”

What does a semiconductor chip manufacturer do?

From Hitachi, it states, “a semiconductor chip is an electric circuit with many components such as transistors and wiring formed on a semiconductor wafer. An electronic device comprising numerous these components is called ‘integrated circuit (IC)’. The layout of the components is patterned on a photomask (reticle) by computer and projected onto a semiconductor wafer in the manufacturing processes described below.”

Intel has a reputation for creating microprocessors set up in majority of personal computers. “Intel’s microprocessors are supplied and used in computers at several large tech companies, including Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Intel also manufactures graphics chips, flash memory, motherboard chipsets, and other computing devices.”
